Background on Poggioreale

Poggioreale was founded in 1642 by Francesco Morso. In 1968 was razed by the terrible earthquake and was later rebuilt in Mandria di Mezzo quarter on three bastions each of them is characterized by a residential nucleus that exended round the circular square.

The name of Poggioreale derives from Medieval Latin Podium regale (seat worthy of a king). It rises as agricultural centre, founded by Francesco Morso in 1642.

In 1968 a heavy earthquake struck the Belice's valley and caused the destruction almost of 80% of Poggioreale. Then it was rebuilt in Mandria di Mezzo quarter. This new installation is divided into three laid upon bastions, each of them is formed by a residential nucleus that is arranged like a ring round the circular square.
